He survived more than a decade behind bars and has beaten a death-defying drug addiction– now all Douglas Thomas* wanted was a job.
But when you’re 61-years-old, based in a remote South Australian town, and you don’t have a driver’s licence due to your medical record, it’s fair to suggest the extent of Douglas’ existent opportunities were far from overwhelming.
That was before Douglas joined Joblife Employment and together, with his trusted consultant Danny Debs, they committed to an employment plan that would ensure the second half of Douglas’ life would be lived to the fullest.
“Douglas essentially had no family or a support network around him when he was released from prison. He was open to learning and he just wanted to get a job, stay clean and go straight,” Danny said.
“He had arrived in Australia by boat as a teenager many years ago and he had spent most of the past 10 years in and out of prison when I met him.
“He had an existing medical condition which had previously prevented him from working and he also battled a drug addiction but once we worked through that and established a pathway forward, I could see Douglas wanted to change his life.
Douglas’ story really inspired me and I wanted to make that happen for him.”
And make it happen Danny did. Within weeks of engaging with Joblife Employment, Danny secured Douglas a causal role with a traffic management company and life has never been better.
“That’s why I got into this industry and why I love doing this job – to be able to help make a difference in people’s lives,” Danny said.
