According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the leading cause of total burden on young Australian women is anxiety.
Whether that is in their personal or professional life, anxiety can be a major barrier to growth.
Layla Buchanan, from Joblife’s Toukley office, experiences anxiety and has found approaching employers to be very challenging.
“Layla was very shy, and she had a speech impediment which made her shyness worse.” Joblife Employment Consultant Elisha Heiler says.
“To build her confidence and understanding of what was expected, we wandered local shopping centres in Toukley, approaching employers with her resume. We did this fortnightly going to different shopping centres.
I then decided to chat to Layla about her presentation so she could give a good impression to prospective employers. I asked her to wear long dress pants and have her hair back so employers could see her fresh face. By the end, Layla gained so much confidence she was approaching employers by herself.” Elisha explains.
Elisha also took Layla to Because We Care Boutique, a service for disadvantaged women or women looking to re-enter the work force look and feel their best.
Elisha secured Layla a work trial at a hotel as a housekeeper. While Layla was an excellent worker, she experienced a slight setback.
“A boss said hello to her, and she freaked out. She had a panic attack.” Elisha recalls. “They had to let her go because they were worried what would happen if a customer approached her. They did not know if the environment was right for Layla.”
Elisha refused to give up on Layla, they continued working on Layla’s confidence after the unsuccessful work trial. Eventually, Elisha noticed the hotel was still advertising the position and approached them once more.
“The hotel decided to give Layla another trial, it went well, they want to bring her on permanently.” Elisha says.
COVID-19 lockdowns have prevented Layla from commencing her new job, but once restrictions ease, her time will come.
