When Townsville’s mighty Blackhawks take to the field this weekend their newest teammate and biggest fan will be passionately playing a pivotal role behind the scenes.

And although Rhys Lambert’s name won’t appear on the team list, the impact he’s had on the entire club since he started working there earlier this year has been remarkable.

“Rhys is an absolute inspiration to us and everyone he comes in contact with,” Brothers Leagues Townsville Human Resources Manager Deanne Sheridan said.

“He loves coming to work every day and he still can’t believe he’s got a job at Brothers Leagues Townsville – he plays AFL on the weekends but he’s actually the biggest rugby league fan ever.

“We’re all so proud of Rhys and the unbelievably positive outlook he has on life – and that’s despite all his health battles – the players love having him around and they love how clean he keeps their dressing sheds.

“Rhys is our hero.”

Rhys’ life-changing opportunity arose through his relationship with his service provider Joblife Employment and their star performer Veronica Meija-Garcia.

Born with an intellectual disability, Rhys, 29, is assisted by mental health and disability support service Open Minds to reach his goals and aspirations both at home and in the community.

But no health concern could curtail Rhys’ burning desire to one-day secure ongoing employment and, backed by Veronica’s unwavering commitment, Rhys’s dreams all came true when he started at Brothers earlier this year.

“When he arrived for the interview, he just kept looking around saying he loved our footy field and his passion was just so infectious – our hearts melted,” Veronica said.

“Brothers didn’t actually have a position going but they could see how much Rhys wanted to work and special thanks to Deanne and the Chief Executive Officer Justin Wilkins for creating a job for him – they made his lifelong dream come true.”

Thanks to the innovative fast thinking by Veronica and Deanne, Rhys now works as a cleaner and groundsmen for Brothers Leagues- a very important role in a post-COVID world where practicing good hygiene is saving lives.
