1 in 8 Australian men will experience depression. Men are also less likely to seek help when experiencing mental health problems.
Emerald client, Robert, 47, came to Joblife after being unemployed for two and half years.
“My family business collapsed because of the global economic climate. I was bulletproof for years, so it was hard to admit that I wasn’t bulletproof anymore. I was depressed and my employment consultant in jobactive was lovely and referred me to Disability Employment Services.” Robert explained.
Robert also lives with knee injuries that prohibit him from standing for too long, something he would do frequently in his previous jobs.
Robert spent his entire career working as a soil tester and worked his way up the ranks to laboratory manager.
After two and half years of focusing on his mental health, Robert was eager to re-join the workforce. He eventually secured a job at Russ-Tech in a data entry role.
Regional Team leader Becci Fazldeen wanted to support Robert advance in his employment through workplace modifications.
“When I connected with Joblife, Becci took me on, and we built a very good relationship. She organised for JobAccess to do an inspection of my new workplace and then organised for a new chair and scissor lift work bench to support my injuries. The assistance really helps me do my job more effectively.” Robert explained.
Robert soon proved how talented he was in appliance repairs and was offered a new role within his organisation: an apprenticeship.
Embracing his new opportunity after some hesitation, Robert now works fixing fridges, microwaves, washing machines and more. Becci continues to support him in his new venture.
