Partnerships within the Community: Big Picture Education Australia and Joblife

Our Manjimup Employment Consultant, Emma Pickering, has been working with Big Picture for the past couple of months. Here’s what they have to say about the impact she is making:

Big Picture’s aim is to support students through their final years at High School and guide them into pathways which include future education, training and the possibility of full time employment.

There are often several hurdles when working with Year 11 and 12 students in an Engagement Program. These include social and emotional barriers as well as learning blocks when it comes to Literacy and Numeracy.

In previous years we have struggled to link our students into full time employment or further education due to not having the close connections with the community to find jobs that suit our students’ capabilities.

In the last two months we have started liaising with Emma Pickering from Joblife and it has already opened up several opportunities for our students.

Emma’s initial meeting with the students allow her to understand their attitudes and values in regards to career and occupation. Emma has been a fantastic help in assisting the class with their resumes so they are industry specific.

In the short amount of time we have been working with Emma several of our students have already made links out in the community and visited a variety of businesses that are looking to either employ or take on a trainee or apprentice.

Not only has there been a direct positive effect on the students but it has also been extremely beneficial to us, the staff. Emma has worked with us and given us advice on what we can do with the students in order to prepare them and make them more work ready.

I look forward to seeing where this partnership goes in the future as it has already had a positive effect on our students in a relatively short period of time.
